Reception or party? Official dinner or poker with friends? We have the best dressing options for all possible festive scenarios.
Holidays are a dream, dressing for festivals is rather a nightmare. At New Year’s Eve, you are closer to a stylistic foul than ever: on the one hand, you are in danger of appearing in casual at a place where everyone wears formal clothing, on the other hand, you are trembling in the fact that in a cool crowd you are too much of an exception.
Is there a balance?
How do you stand out at the festive occasions without crossing the fine line between the well-dressed man and the penguin-man?
Guide of man’s style has a series of elegant and safe sets for New Year’s Eve and all the festive days, depending on where you are invited, your mood and your style.
BLACK TIE EVENT / A GOOD RESTAURANT
Black tie invitation on Christmas or New Year’s Eve means tuxedo, bow tie and cufflinks. It also means everyone around you wearing the same, listening to live jazz, drinking champagne and eating caviar. Because in many countries such calls are rather scarce (and in addition the dresscode is not adhered to anywhere), you will not put a bow tie because you are in danger of being the only one in the room. You can do it by wearing only your suit, which does not even have to be black – navy blue, dark gray or pinstripe to replace it just fine.
Besides, the glamour you need can be given to you with tie made of silk or satin. If you do not wear a tie then don’t – but in this case you must upgrade your outfit somehow: a velvet jacket or a black suit worn with an formal white shirt is the solution.
FAMILY GATHERINGS / CASINO
The situation is somewhat freer here, which means you have other choices than the suit. It is advisable not to get rid of the tie – especially if you are invited to a family gathering for food and gift exchange you have to wear it to honor the hosts.
You will just do it in a more casual way, for example. with cloth trousers and a thin sweater over or with a casual jacket instead of a jacket. The same rules apply to casinos and nightclubs: layering is ideal in these cases because you can put and take out clothes depending on how warm you are. Finally, you may not wear a shirt if you want, but replace it with a thin sweater in dark shades of your suit.
IN A POKER EVENT / IN A LARGE PARTY IN A CLUB
These circumstances do not impose a tie and certainly do not require a suit – but then of course you can wear one if you wish-, it’s Christmas so you will not be misunderstood. If, however, you want to be comfortable, a casual jacket over your shirt or a sweater can give you the looks.
WITH A LOT OF FRIENDS IN THE HOUSE / IN A CASUAL PARTY IN A HOUSE
We do not need to tell you, you already know it: you can wear anything you want, even your everyday clothes. But do not do it. It’s these few days of time that you have the ability to dress a bit better and get your leather shoes out of their box to get air. Combine them with casual pants, t-shirts and sweaters. Do not succumb to the comfort and charm of jeans and all-star. Have a little patience. Suit up! From January 1st onwards, they will again become your second skin.
